Over the past decade, employment in high-tech occupations - science, technology, engineering and math - has consistently outpaced total job growth by a ratio of 27-to-1.
Demand for high-skilled workers will continue to grow. Employment in high-tech industries is projected to grow 16.2% while STEM occupations are projected to grow by 13.9% while total jobs are expected to increase by 13.3.%.
The SKILLS Visa Act Will create a new visa program - the STEM visa program - which allocates up to 55,000 green cards to foreign students of U.S. Universities with advanced STEM degrees. Additionally, it provides up to 10,000 green cards for foreign entrepreneurs who can attract investment from venture-capital firms to establish businesses that will create five jobs or more.
Currently, green cards are awarded at random, disregarding the years-long and high-skilled study foreign students graduating from our universities have put in. The SKILLS Visa Act, eliminates this lottery and grants visas based off skills, not luck.
