Issa: I'm A "No" on Tax Reform Without Changes For CA Families

Press Release
Nov 7, 2017

Congressman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) released the following statement after announcing that he will not support the proposed tax reform bill in its current form.

“Tax reform done right will leave more money in Americans’ pocketbooks, create jobs, and ignite the kind of economic growth we haven’t seen in decades.  Our country needs tax reform now more than ever, and I am committed to achieving this goal to reduce taxes for all Americans.

However, my overriding concern with the current House tax reform proposal is that many Californians who need and deserve tax relief won’t benefit from the current framework, or at worse, may see their tax burden rise as a consequence of certain changes including, but not limited to, the elimination of the state and local income tax deduction.

It’s true that Sacramento’s misguided, high-tax policies have punished hardworking families and businesses in our state year after year. And with last week’s increase to the gas tax, Californians once again make the top of the list for highest costs in the nation. These sky-high tax rates, coupled with high housing and property costs, are pushing Californians to the brink.

I cannot endorse changes that may make the tremendous burden felt by California taxpayers even worse. Tax reform should lower taxes for all taxpayers – regardless of where they live.

I will continue fighting for improvements to this bill that all California taxpayers and small businesses can embrace.”
