ICYMI - Congressman Issa Calls for End to Funding for California Sexually Violent Predator Neighborhood Releases
WASHINGTON-- Congressman Darrell Issa sent a letter to newly sworn-in Health & Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. requesting a stop to federal funding support for California’s Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) Conditional Release Program (CONREP), which releases sexually violent felons from secure facilities into California neighborhoods.
SVPs are clinically diagnosed individuals convicted of sexually violent crimes, and are medically supported through federally funded Medicare and Medicaid services. These individuals are designated by doctors as incurable and are neither undergoing treatment nor in recovery. Recent data has shown that 70 percent of SVPs released into communities in California were returned to custody for violating their release terms. Despite this fact, the number of SVPs released into the San Diego regional community continues to rapidly increase.
This letter follows repeated calls to Governor Newsom and the California State Government by Congressman Issa, state and local officials, and concerned community members to end this dangerous program.
