Issa Votes in Favor of Fire Grants and Safety Act

May 10, 2024

On May 8, 2024, Congressman Issa voted in support of the Fire Grants and Safety Act in the House.

Firefighters play a critical role in mitigating and responding to the persistent threat of fires that occur at our homes, businesses, across landscapes, and other locations in our communities. In 2021, there were an estimated 1.35 million fires responded to by local fire departments in the United States.  These fires caused 3,800 civilian deaths and an estimated $15.9 billion in property damage.

Southern California is especially vulnerable to wildfires.  With some of the best fire protection entities in the country, the continuation of federal support is essential to continuing robust regional protection.

The Fire Grant and Safety Act will provide a five-year reauthorization for the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), the Assistance to Firefighter Grants (AFG) Program, and the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grant (SAFER) Program.  Fire stations across the country rely on SAFER, AFG, and the USFA programs to help fund critical resources and information access to protect communities and firefighting personnel.

With House passage, and previous bipartisan Senate approval, the bill now heads to the President's desk for signature into law.
