Issa Co-Cosponsors Legislation to Aid San Diego Water Needs

February 2, 2021

Washington, DC - Congressman Darrell Issa (CA-50) has cosponsored H.R. 587, the Ocean Pollution Reduction Act II (OPRA II), introduced by San Diego colleague Rep. Scott Peters (CA-52). This legislation removes regulatory excess to allow for easier management of the Point Loma Wastewater Plant (PLWTP), an area asset that treats per day up to 240 million gallons of water needed by millions of San Diego residents.

“Providing clean and affordable water to the San Diego region is a top priority. I appreciate Rep. Peter’s leadership and I am very glad the entire, bipartisan San Diego Congressional delegation is working together to see that this regulatory fix is signed into law,” said Issa.

OPRA II was approved by the House of Representatives in November 2020 with near unanimous support, but the Senate did not act before the end of the year.

The legislation would allow PLWTP to undergo a less costly and lengthy permitting renewal process strict water recycling metrics are met.
